Manipur register thumping victory

Elima Minz scored 10 goals for Orissa who tharshed Bengal by a massive 30- 0 margin. Chandigarh defeated Assam 18- 0.

Manipur came up with a superb display of attacking hockey to thrash Maharashtr­a 8- 2 in a Pool C encounter of the 4th Hockey India sub- junior national champioshi­p Division A in Ranchi on Tuesday.

Monish Singh ( 5th, 19th minutes), Dhananjoy Singh ( 11th, 50th) and Thoungamba Meitei ( 55th, 66th) scored twice each for the team from the north- east while Ibung Singh ( 37th) and Stelin Singh ( 44) rounded off the tally.

Maharashtr­a reduced the margin through Ajinkya Jhadav ( 54th) and Rahul Shinde ( 63rd).

In another Pool C match, Punjab rode on a brace by Pargat Singh ( 38th, 68th) to blank Uttar Pradesh 5- 0.

Shubhkarma­n Singh ( 9th), Mehkeet Singh ( 53rd) and Dilpreet Singh ( 60th) were the other scorers for Punjab.

In Pool D, Lalchhantl­uanga ( 46th, 60th) struck twice in the second half as Mizoram came back from a goal down to pip Madya Pradesh 2- 1.

Ravi Panche scored off a penalty corner in the 14th minute to give Madhya Pradesh the lead. The MP boys defended fiercely the lead but could not hold out against the fast, aggressive game of their opponents.

In another Pool D match, Haryana defeated Chandigarh 31.

Haryana’s Amit ( 33rd) scored the only goal of the first half.

Abhishek ( 38th) and Deepak ( 40th) stroked in two goals within a span of two minutes almost immediatel­y after the restart before Manjinder Singh ( 46th) got the consolatio­n for Chandigarh.

ORISSA, CHANDIGARH WIN BIG

In the sub- junior nationals for girls being played out at Pune, Maharashtr­a, Hockey Orissa registered a mind boggling 30- 0 victory over Bengal in a Pool D match.

Elima Minz scored 10 goals while Mariana Kujur ( eight goals) and Sarojini Ekka ( six). Ashim Kanchan Barla ( 35th, 57th, 66th), Dipti Lakra ( 15th, 69th) and Priyanka Kujur ( 52nd) got the other goals.

In the the other Pool D game, Chandigarh rode on a whopping 11 goals from Saroj to thrash a hapless Assam 18- 0.

Manisha ( 14th, 40th, 63rd), Sharmila ( 44th, 67th), Lakhwinder Kaur ( 9th) and Kirandeep Kaur ( 42nd) got the other goals.

In Pool C, Jharkhand recorded an easy 7- 0 victory over Uttar Pradesh. Promila Soreng ( 28th, 64th, 69th) got ont the scoresheet after Pinki Ekka ( 4th) had given Jharkhand the early lead. Nisha Rani Aind ( 18th), Alka Dung Dung ( 31st) and Sitamani Topno ( 41st) also found the target.
