NSUI focus on local leaders

Breaking away from the old practice of calling ex- student leaders from outside Delhi to influence the voters of their respective states in Delhi University Student Union ( Dusu) election, the students outfit of the Congress, the National Students Union of India ( NSUI), has decided not to call such leaders for the campaignin­g for the forthcomin­g polls.

Newly- elected president of NSUI, Mr Roji M. John, told this newspaper that from now on, the arrival of outstation party leaders for Dusu polls will be stopped. “Only those NSUI leader who were associated with Delhi University till last year may be allowed to come to help the organisati­on and candidates in the Dusu elections, to be held on September 12,” he added.

states. Most of these leaders hail from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan.

According to NSUI sources, the party arrange their transporta­tion, lodging and other facilities during their stay.

Once the result are announced, they go back to their respective states.

The idea to stop outside student leaders from coming during Dusu polls is to reduce the influence of money. “Any student organisati­on should leave the election to the students. The absence of outsiders will also help the university authority to conduct smooth, free and fair elections,” said Mr John.

Mr John believes that brilliant students are studying in Delhi University and they can’t be influenced by anyone else, so the whole idea of calling leaders from outside the city and the university will not work.
