BJP MPs stage dharna against Akhilesh govt

- AGE CORRESPONDENT

Over two dozen BJP MPs, including minister of state for agriculture Sanjiv Baliyan, staged a one- day dharna in Lucknow on Monday to protest against the deteriorating law and order situation, prevailing power crisis and the misery of farmers.

The BJP MPs raised antigovernment slogans like “Pradesh ki janata trast, CM videsh me mast ”, an obvious reference to UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav’s visit to the Netherlands.

The leaders blamed the Samajwadi Party government for the deteriorating law and order, power crisis and the worst situation due to floods and drought.

“This government is only interested in appeasement of vote banks for political gain and has no concern for the problems being faced by the common man,” said Mr Baliyan while sitting on dharna at the GPO Park here.

The BJP MPs, along with other party workers, later went to Raj Bhavan to submit a memorandum about the power crisis, law and order problem and the miseries of the people against the backdrop of floods and drought in the state. BJP MPs from constituencies where byelections are being held were exempted from the programme.

BJP spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak said similar dharnas were held in the districts by local party workers. He said that the decision to stage a statewide dharna was taken during the state executive meeting in Vrindavan last month.
