The Central Bureau of Investigation has zeroed in on two influential political leaders from West Bengal and is all set to question them in connection with the multi- crore Saradha chit fund scam before submitting its first chargesheet by the end of this month.

They are suspected to have played a key role in the “larger conspiracy” behind the scam. The two heavyweight figures have so far remained untouched by the investigators even though many persons — including some arrested and accused who were earlier grilled by the Central agency — spelt out their names for their involvement in transactions with Saradha Group, according to sources.

The special investigation team of the CBI is now busy in collecting strong evidence against the two politicians, sources revealed. Based on the evidence the two would be summoned for questioning by the investigators and even may face legal steps, sources added.

The development comes as the CBI is finalising its first chargesheet in the scam against Saradha Tours & Travels to be submitted at the court. Sources indicated that the names of the two politicians may be referred in the chargesheet if their link in the “larger conspiracy” is proved.

The agency is still waiting for the records it had sought from the land and land reforms department of the Mamata Banerjee government to unearth the amount of land held by Saradha Group owner Sudipta Sen.
