India clinch last- minute thriller

India retained the Sultan of Johor Cup U- 21 men’s hockey title in style, pulling off a last- minute winner against Great Britain in the final at Johor Bahru, Malaysia, on Sunday. Tournament’s top scorer Harmanpree­t Singh excelled with a brace, as India won 2- 1.

The first half saw a tight clash between the two teams. India goalkeeper Abhinav Pandey stood out with a series of saves. The men in blue too had their chances, but failed to break

Harmanpree­t Singh picked up the player of the tournament award, while skipper Harjeet Singh was named the most promising player

through Great Britain’s defence as the teams headed into the break locked 0- 0.

It was only in the 46th minute when India earned their first penalty corner. Harmanpree­t Singh’s percise conversion helped India open their account, while the opponents pulled level 10 minute later. Great Britain’s Samuel French converted a penalty corner as the game headed to an exciting finish.

Drag- flicker Harmanpree­t stole the show as he made no mistake converting yet another penalty corner with only 45 seconds remaining in the match.

Said coach Harendra Singh, “It was anyone’s game after the scores were tied in the 56th minute. This team have shown immense potential to emerge as the one of the best in the world.”

Harmanpree­t picked up the player of the tournament award, while skipper Harjeet Singh was named the most promising player.
