Letter to PM on ‘ promises to Muslims’
Senior Congress leader and former MLC Siraj Mehndi has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking him to implement various measures for the welfare and development of Muslims as promised in Parliament. Mr Mehndi has said in his letter that the Modi government will soon be completing six months in office but so far no steps have been taken to reassure the Muslims.
In his 18- point charter of demands, the Congress leader has sought implementation of Sachhar Committee recommendations in the field of education, speedy disposal of petitions seeking delinking of religion from the Scheduled Caste category, proper laws for managing wakf properties and fasttrack courts for Muslim youth who have been jailed in terror cases and compensation for them.
The Congress leader has further pointed out that some constituencies having a sizeable Muslim population have been put in the reserved category and these should be declared unreserved at the earliest.
Recognition of madrasa degrees at par with other degrees and a special component plan for Muslims are among the other demands that the Congress leader has put up in his letter. Talking to this correspondent, Mr Mehndi said that through his letter he simply wanted to remind the PM that the Muslims are anxiously waiting for him to fulfil the promises he had made to the community.
