As Bilawal Bhutto is resolute about leading the Pakistan People’s Party on his own terms, his father Asif Ali Zardari is contemplating launching daughter Bakhtawar Bhutto as a potential leader.
Bilawal Bhutto, according to PPP sources, has excused himself from attending an upcoming event to his grandfather Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s death anniversary, amid rumours of differences with his father.
The PPP chief had also missed his mother Benazir Bhutto’s death anniversary gathering on December 27 and some earlier events, much to his father’s annoyance.
“Now that Bilawal Bhutto is not expected to come on April 4 ( Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s death anniversary), Asif Ali Zardari will introduce his daughter Bakhtawar Bhutto,” said a senior PPP leader.
Media reports said Asif Ali Zardari’s second child is being groomed to take part in “real” politics as she has started taking part in political activities and senior PPP women activists have been asked to train her.
“All of Benazir Bhutto and Asif Ali Zardari’s children will take part in active politics, but the date and time will be decided by the party,” said a PPP leader. It is widely believed that Bakhtawar Bhutto will be formally launched into active politics on the 36th death anniversary of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
“Asif Ali Zardari will make an important announcement on the occasion,” PPP secretary information Sindh chapter Waqar Mehdi said.
This week, Bakhtawar Bhutto addressed a ceremony in Bilawal House and was seen distributing compensation cheques to the families affected by two separate bomb blasts in Football Ground and Kumbharwara Chowk, Lyari, in 2013.
Bakhtawar and Bilawal grandfather, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, died at the gallows, hanged in 1979 after being deposed in a military coup.
Their mother, Benazir Bhutto, was killed in a bomb and bullet attack in 2007, months after she returned to Pakistan from eight years in self- exile.
Meanwhile, massive barriers and road blocks placed on avenues around Bilawal House — the residence of PPP co- chairman Asif Ali Zardari — were removed.
The Karachi metropolitan corporation crew began the clearance operation around Bilawal House with the help of heavy machinery after midnight.
Mr Zardari, a former President, himself requested that the barriers surrounding his Karachi residence should be removed.
PPP leader Sharjeel Memon said the decision to remove the security barriers was taken up despite grave security threats.
Also on Wednesday, Mr Zardari chaired a meeting of Opposition parties at the Bilawal House.
The meeting discussed the current situation of the country due to the Yemen crisis.
