- AGE CORRESPONDENT

The AAP government has decided to pay ` 1- crore compensation to families of all Delhi- based men in uniform who lose their lives on duty in any part of the country. Also, the government has decided that any men in uniform from any part of the country who die in the line of duty in the national capital territory of Delhi will be entitled to the same amount of compensation.

At a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, the AAP government also decided that it would be the responsibility of the state administration to provide a job to one member of the martyr’s family. Deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia said that the AAP government simply wanted to honour all those who sacrifice their lives for the country. “We just want to send a message that our society cares for those who sacrifice their lives for the country.”

Mr Sisodia said that a separate fund would soon be created to pay compensation to the families of the martyrs. “There will be a budgetary allocation for this fund as well.” He said that the government’s decision would cover the Delhi police, CISF, BSF, Army, Navy, Air Force, ITBP, Rapid Action Force, Home Guards and members of the civil defence.

The AAP government during its 49- day tenure had first given ` 1- crore compensation to the family of a Delhi police officer who had lost his life while fighting the liquor mafia. The AAP had compensated the family of another Delhi policeman who recently died on duty. During the one- year President’s Rule, lieutenant- governor Najeeb Jung too had given ` 1 crore compensation to the families of two other policemen who lost their lives in the line of duty.

A beat constable in South Delhi said the AAP had done what all other governments had failed to do — to honour honest policemen. “Such a decision is bound to lift our morale.” Reacting to the AAP government’s decision, a lieutenant- colonel in East Delhi said the AAP had sent a message across the country that it cared for all those who were fighting for the welfare of the nation.
