In a horrific incident, a 17year- old second PU student, Gauthami, of Pragati Residential School and PU College was shot dead from a pointblank range by a 38year- old office attendant, Mahesh in Kadugodi on the outskirts of the city on Tuesday night.
Mahesh, who was carrying a country- made pistol, also shot and injured Gauthami’s friend Shirisha ( 17). He was arrested by a special police team from his sister’s house in B. Narayanapura in K. R. Puram on Wednesday afternoon, within hours of the crime. The police said that Mahesh, who brought food, water and other supplies to the girls, had imposed certain restrictions on the girls at the hostel. The students had complained to the management about his highhanded behaviour and that might have led to the incident, said city police commissioner M. N. Reddi.
The incident occurred at 10.03 pm on Tuesday on the third floor of the hostel attached to the Pragati Residential School. Mahesh got into the hostel, went straight to Gauthami’s room on the third floor, and fired two rounds at her from a pointblank range. One of the bullets hit her chin, while the other went through her head, killing her instantly.
Later, he tried to barge into Shirisha’s room, but she shut the door. He pushed the gun through the crack of the door and tried to shoot, but it misfired. He again pushed his way into the room and shot at her, injuring her under the nose, before fleeing from the spot.
Hearing Shirisha’s cries, other students rushed to her help and informed the college management, who alerted the police. The police found Gauthami lying on the bed and took her to Vydehi Hospital in Kadugodi, where she was declared dead. Shirisha was rushed to Manipal Hospital, where her condition was stable. The police said that the college had only one security guard on Tuesday night.
