Space optimisation

-

Less is beautiful. It certainly stands true for houses in urban areas, where space is a major constraint. Managing space in the most efficient manner in smaller spaces is no less than a skill. After a few trials and errors, anybody can start excelling in home organisation, to be precise — space optimisation.

One needs to have a minimalistic approach to make their homes look elegant and spacious. Anybody can fill space with innumerable things, but only adding up things does not make a house look trendy. It only leads to making it look clumsy and overpacked. No matter how big a space you have, if it is not organised, it would appear squeezed. Space management is an art. Here are a few tips on how to do it right. 1. Dump unnecessary things: Anything that has not been in use is meant to be dumped. It is important to take stock of such things and do away with them. If you find any corner table, chair, book rack, etc just occupying space without serving any purpose, dispose it off. Doing so will create room for other important items and give your house a breathing space. 2. Choose colours diligently: To create a sense of vastness, it is advisable to paint walls with light colours rather than dark ones. Hues with soft shades reflect more light and help the space look more spacious. Due to nonreflection of light, spaces with darker shades around automatically start looking confined. White, cream and icy blue colours help a tiny room look seemingly bigger. 3. Innovative space saving: One of the best ways to optimise space at home is to look for innovative space- saving solutions or products which help you utilise vertical space of the walls or empty air space which cannot be used for anything else. This way you can utilise the three dimensional space to create additional area over and above the carpet area of your house. The o t h e r important aspect is to organise things in a proper way and in their r e s p e c t i v e l o c a t i o n s . Also, keeping stuff in closed storage reduces clutter around the house. 4. Smart utility products: There are many products which can help you create more space or optimise space in your house. Several products are available in the market that create usable space above your washing machine area which otherwise goes waste. Similarly, one can opt for dryers which use the vertical wall space of your balc o n i e s and bathrooms to c r e a t e additional space for d r y i n g c l o t h e s . Organisers and folding wardrobe also create space and make your house more organised and clutter free. 5. Heel up your furniture: Exchange your low platform beds and sofas for ones which have drawers and cabinets built in them at their foundation. Heeled up furniture will result in providing you with some storage capabilities. Seasonal clothes, your unused gifts can be locked in such space. 6. Use it and fold it: Foldaway beds and couches are gaining popularity over traditional furniture due to the smart space- saving solutions they provide. When you have guests at your home, then folding bed is the best option available. As the name suggests, such type of furniture can be reduced to smaller forms and be stored in the wardrobe, cupboard or attic. Another problem is that beds can work out to be very expensive. So if you buy a bed just for guests who may visit you once or twice a year, it's not a wise investment. 7. Do some shelve- ing and cubby- ing: Adding more shelves to your wardrobes with glass doors will serve the dual purpose of “store it and show it”. All your exclusive crockery can be showcased in a layered structure of the shelves, and you can exhibit all those precious things, and become a good storage manager too. Cubbies with box- like enclosures and compartments can gloss up your child’s room. 8. Use mirrors to create space illusion: If space is a constraint, the best way to trick the eyes and make it look bigger is by the use of mirrors. They reflect light and illuminate the surface, which make the area appear large and spacious. To give an impression of larger areas, using mirrors on an entire wall is a good idea.

So if less space has been bothering you, just use some creative ideas to make it look bigger and more functional.
