Wanaka: A magnitude- 5.6 earthquake jolted the South

Island of New Zealand on Monday afternoon, but there were no initial reports of major damage or injuries. The US geological survey put the centre of the temblor at 30 km northwest of

the town of Wanaka. The New Zealand police issued a statement saying that people had reported some inst

ances of broken windows but no major damage. Residents across the South Island reported feeling the qua

ke as a strong rattle.
