Railways girls are national champs

Railways thrashed Jharkhand 12- 2 in the final of the 5th Hockey India senior women’s national championsh­ip in Saifai, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday.

Soundaraya Yendala got a hattrick for Railways while Sunita Lakra and Lilima Minz scored a brace each. Deep Grace Ekka, Manmeet Kaur, Anuradha Devi, Anupa Barla and Punam Barla completed the tally.

Birsi Munda and Anima Minz replied for Jharkhand.

The final started on an exciting note with both teams play- ing attacking hockey.

Sunita and Deep Grace Ekka gave Railways a 2- 0 lead before Birsi struck for Jharkhand. Sunita converted a penalty corner to take the lead at 3- 1.

Jharkhand struck again through Anima Minz who scored a field goal to reduce the margin.

However, the Jharkhand girls were unable to find any more success thereafter as Railways strengthen­ed their grip on the match.

In the play- off for the third spot, Punjab rode on goals from Hardeep Kaur and Reena Rani to defeat Madhya Pradesh 2- 0.
