‘ Can turn things around if we play to our capability’

Touted as one of the pre- tournament favourites, Kings XI Punjab have so far failed to live up to their billing, currently residing at the bottom of the eight- team table. Things haven’t gone according to plan and no one agrees to it more than captain George Bailey. “We are certainly not playing well as we would like to. The beauty of this competition is that it gives you the opportunity to tinker with the combination that will help you win the tour- nament. It is also a league where you go from top to bottom quite easily and vice- versa.

“We’ve been inconsistent which is extremely disappointing but there’s enough cricket for us to effect a turnaround,” said the skipper ahead of their clash with Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday.

Asked about what has changed this year following their appearance in the final in the previous edition, the Australian was coy in answering.

“Bowling has been okay this year. The batting has been the biggest letdown. Anureet ( Singh) and Sandeep ( Sharma) have been outstanding while Axar ( Patel) has had a good tournament as well.

“The local bowlers have really stepped up. A lot of times, the totals we’ve managed have been under par,” he said stressing that they could still enter the playoffs.

“It’s a question of regaining confidence. But if we play as well as we are capable of, we can turn it around.”

The 32- year- old also backed under- performing countryman Glenn Maxwell.

“When he clicks, it’s great and when he doesn’t it is disappointing. Yeah, he’s not done as well as he did last season. But I am pretty sure he will come good in the coming games,” he said.
