Assam cops track down movements of Ulfa chief Paresh Baruah in China
Assam director- general of police Khagen Sarma here on Tuesday said that they have tracked down the movement of elusive Ulfa ( I) chief Paresh Baruah in China.
Claiming that elusive Ulfa chief was in Myanmar to celebrate the Bihu festival with its cadres, Mr Sarma told reporters that Mr Baruah was sending video of Bihu celebrations and photographs in media to send message to his sympathisers that they have been living in a comfortable living condition in exile. Apart from attracting media attention, the Ulfa chief was trying to make their presence felt through these photographs and videos circulated frequently by them through emails.
Claiming that newlyformed joint platform of Northeast insurgent groups under the leadership of S. S. Khaplang of NSCN would not be able to make any impact, Mr Sarma said that top leadership of Songbijit faction of NDFB was also on the run for shelter in the hilly terrain of Manas Tiger Reserve since the Ultapani camp of the outfit was busted.
Admitting that security forced missed the opportunity of catching the entire leadership of the NDFB recently, Mr Sarma said that security forces had specific input on presence of nearly 35 hardcore NDFB leaders in a camp. However, a sentry of the camp alerted them to flee before security forces could launch the offensive, he said adding that all the cadres managed to leave the camp with their arms and ammunitions. Pointing out that NDFB cadres could not take their other belongings, Mr Sarma said that they are still moving in the same area and efforts are on to catch them. “We have already arrested 343 NDFB cadres out of which 204 are the hardcore member of the outfit. About 100 sophisticated weapons, 164 grenade and 62 kg of explosive was also recovered from them,” said the DGP.
