The Delhi police said it had solved the murder of 71year- old Harmeet Kaur in less than 15 hours after she was found dead in her second floor flat in South Delhi’s Kalkaji on Monday morning.

The police arrested her former domestic help, Anil Kumar Sharma, and his friend, Krishna, for planning and executing the murder and robbery. Both the men are from Jharkhand’s Chatra district, but have been living in Delhi for work.

The police claimed to have recovered the entire robbed cash and jewellery worth over ` 1 crore from the perpetrators, who were hiding at home of Sharma’s relative in Jaipur. The victim had sacked Sharma six months ago after he contracted tuberculosis.

Even after losing his job, Sharma remained in touch with the woman on phone. As he had worked for the family for over a year, Sharma was familiar with

everything in the flat, according to Deependra Pathak, joint CP ( southwestern range).

“Sharma knew the places where the family kept cash, jewellery, and other valuables. Before executing the crime, Sharma and Krishna, had conducted reconnaissance of the house for 3- 4 days,” said Mr Pathak.

On Monday afternoon, Sharma first sent Krishna to Kaur’s house as a courier boy since he knew that the victim was alone and her family was away. “As planned, Krishna convinced Kaur to open the door. Sharma appeared suddenly and the two pushed the elderly woman inside and pinned her down. When she attempted to raise an alarm, they wrapped her face with a bedsheet and smothered her,” said Mandeep Singh Randhawa, DCP ( southeast).

As Kaur became unconscious, Sharma and Krishna fled with ` 2.30 lakh in cash, jewellery worth over ` 1 crore and 10 costly wrist watches after pulling the main door closed behind them.

The family’s new domestic help, Lalit, had gone to the top floor to take a bath when the crime occurred. When he returned, he found the door locked and Kaur not responding despite repeated his knocks.
