2 Thomas Cook employees stage robbery, busted

Three persons, including two assistant managers of Thomas Cook ( India) Ltd ( TCIL), were arrested by the Delhi police for allegedly staging a fake robbery and misappropr­iating foreign currency amounting ` 2.22 core.

The accused have been identified as Sumit Kumar, Rohit Kumar and Rahul Verma. Sumit, the mastermind behind the plan, cooked up a story that he was robbed of the money and was thrown in an isolated spot in Noida. However, an officer privy to the investigat­ion revealed that Sumit changed buses to reach Noida Sector 62. There, he approached the cops and informed his senior.

According to the senior police officers, Sumit and Rohit worked with TCIL. While Sumit, a postgradua­te from a private university in Haryana, has been working with TCIL for two years, Rohit has been with the company for a few months.

To make easy money, Sumit and Rohit, along with Rahul, hatched a plan to stage a fake robbery. However, cops became suspicious when Sumit’s version did not corroborat­e with his location traced from his call records.

The police found a gaping hole in Sumit’s version. Sumit alleged he was robbed and left in Noida, but the police found that he was in CP at the time.

According to the police, the general manager of TCIL complained that on July 11, at around 9.30 am, Sumit was handed over ` 2.22 crore worth of foreign currency at the company’s IGI Airport T3 branch and was asked to carry it to the Connaught Place branch.

“An hour after Sumit left for CP office, his phone was found to be switched off. Neither the CP branch nor Sumit’s family was aware of his exact whereabout­s. However, an hour later, the GM got a call from Sumit that he has been allegedly kidnapped and robbed of ` 2.22 crore,” said a senior cop.

According to the police, Sumit alleged that he was picked by the robbers in a car and dropped at Noida Sector 62. He then approached the Noida police and also informed his GM. An investigat­ing officer said that during investigat­ion, cops found a gaping hole in Sumit’s version.
