A depressed man strangled his two sons on Wednesday morning over a domestic problem in Mahendra Park area and later informed the police. The police said the incident took place when the accused strangled Ayush (15) and Aryan (8) with a rope and confessed to the police.

“The accused, identified as Mukesh, strangled his two sons on Wednesday morning between 5-6 am at their house and later called the police informing them about his crime. The accused was depressed over a host of issues,” said a senior police official.

“His wife had died last year due to Hepatitis A and he was quite depressed over losing her. He was also frustrated with his children whom he thought were irresponsible and not interested in studies. He was involved in a dispute case over his house in the MCD and that was upsetting him. He was also unemployed,” said the DCP.

The police said after receiving a call from the father regarding the murder, a police team rushed to the spot and took him to the police station for questioning. Meanwhile, both Mukesh’s sons were taken to a nearby hospital, where they were declared brought dead on arrival.

Mukesh was surviving on rent that he used to get from his house. He was disturbed over losing his only source of income after a neighbour, Ashok Chaudhary, had filed a complaint against him with the municipal corporation last year alleging that he had illegally converted his house into a multi-storeyed structure.

Neighbours said that the municipal corporation officials were scheduled to demolish the top floor of Mukesh’s house on November 17. Mr Chaudhary, in his complaint to municipal corporation, had alleged that there was a water seepage problem arising in his house after Mukesh had constructed the new floors, said one of the neighbours.

The police is currently investigating all the allegations and is interrogating Mukesh to know what drove him to take the extreme step of murdering his two sons, the police said, adding that it appears that he was under severe depression.

“We have registered a case under Section 302 (Punishment for murder) of the IPC and arrested the accused,” said the DCP.
