Strategy to double food production outlined

-

New Delhi: A “new strategy” to double productivity was outlined in the Rajya Sabha today by Mr C. Subramaniam, food minister.

The strategy involves maximum utilisation of natural resources with the help of technology to get from the land, food, fodder, fruits and vegetables besides growing forests.

Mr Subramaniam, who was winding up the debate on the food situation, complimented farmers, particularly of the drought-affected areas in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, on giving the “most heartening” response to the efforts of increasing food production.

Mr Subramaniam said that recent rains in various drought hit areas were very heartening. It would greatly benefit rabi crops. But, during the present four to five months, which were very difficult, the Government was trying to import as much as available from any quarter.

He said States should have a realistic distribution plan.

Members both from Treasury and Opposition Benches criticised Government for not supplying seeds, fertiliser and water in time. Some of the Members pleaded for abolition of zonal system as the surplus States were placing restrictions on the movement of food grains.

After the Minister’s speech all the nine amendments to the motion on food debate were rejected.
