The world’s heaviest woman, Eman Ahmed Abdulati, an Egyptian national underwent her first bariatric surgery (sleeve gastrectom­y operation) on Tuesday, as part of her weight loss treatment, at the privately-run Saifee Hospital, Mumbai.

Ms Eman has lost around 150 kg since her admission on February 11 and now weighs 350 kg. Her surgery on Tuesday went on for approximat­ely 105 minutes.

Currently, she is on liquid diet. Ms Eman, weighed around 500 kg at the time of her admission to the hospital on February 16.

Ms Eman is to undergo two more such surgeries in the next 18 months. Doctors treating her aim to bring her weight down to 80-100 kg and enable her to have her lunch on her own within 18 months. After the sleeve gastrectom­y operation, doctors believe Ms Eman has been recovering well and she is under observatio­n. Doctors plan to send her back to Alexandria, Egypt, and keep her under observatio­n, until she returns for the next procedure, which is soon to be scheduled. So far, the hospital has collected around `60 lakh through crowdfundi­ng for Eman’s treatment, via social media. Talking to thsi newspaper, Dr Mufazzal Lakdawala, bariatric surgeon, said, “We are happy to inform that the medical team of the hospital has successful­ly performed the surgery on Ms Eman, who underwent a laparoscop­ic sleeve gastrectom­y on Tuesday. She’s now feeling hale and hearty.”
