FIR against 24 JNU students
Accused of misbehaving with and wrongfully confining the V-C on Feb. 27
An FIR has been registered against more than 24 students of Jawaharlal Nehru University on Wednesday for allegedly misbehaving with vicechancellor Jagdesh Kumar and wrongfully confining him in the rector’s office on February 27.
A case of wrongful restraint and confinement has been registered at Vasant Kunj (North) police station for alleged misbehaviour with JNU vice-vhancellor Jagdesh Kumar by some students of the university last month. The case was registered on the complaint of JNU registrar, said Chinnmoy Biswal, additional DCP (south).
The case has been registered under Sections 341(wrongful restraint), 342 (wrongful confinement), 504 (intentional
insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of IPC, he said.
The complaint was filed by the JNU registrar on March 4 with the police, alleging that the students had removed the blockade of the administration block of the university on February 27, after which they “adamantly” wanted to meet the V-C Jagdesh Kumar.
As per the complaint, the vice-chanellor was unwell and a doctor was summoned but he was not allowed by the students to see Kumar who was “confined” to the Rector 1 office.
Next day a girl student threatened to commit suicide if the V-C did not meet the students and “forced” him to meet them. They also “misbehaved” with Kumar during the meeting, alleged the complainant.
The FIR has been registered against nearly two dozen students including some who have been suspended by JNU administration for allegedly “disrupting” an academic council meeting in December last year.
The JNU students are up in arms against the UGC gazette notification of May 2016 adopted by the university, giving primacy to interviews in M.Phil and Ph.D. admissions.
