A beachside getaway

Tucked away in a scenic locale in Thiruvananthapuram, Azhimala beach stands out for its unique serenity

- MEERA MANU

Eyes in search of umbrella dotted beaches and a sun bath on a sultry afternoon, could take a look at Azhimala. This pristine beach, tucked away in a scenic locale in the Thiruvananthapuram city, is an treat for people looking forward to some peace on a sandy seashore.

Close to Azhimala is Kovalam, the busiest and most commercial beach in the city. The sounds and crowd in this neighbourhood seaside has not yet invaded this tiny Azhimala beach. The unadulterated bucolic charm is in full bloom in the morning and evening.

Azhimala is a portmanteau term of azhi (sea) and mala (hill) — a rare convergence of sea and hill attributing it a befitting name. The sea can be best enjoyed from the hill top. Most visitors here are the worshippers to the Azhimala Siva Temple situated on the hilltop. Both the temple and the beach share a common route with ample space for parking vehicles. The temple visitors usually take the eyesome treat from the hilltop enjoying the cool sea breeze and the gentle caressing of the coconut palm fronds that populate the hill top. Those wishing to enjoy some time on the sea shore and wash their feet in the frothy waves need to take another road away from this. The best ritual to be enjoyed in the morning is fishing. Fishermen spreading and pulling large fishing nets offer a delectable sight. If you are keen on spending a few minutes atop the mossy rocks, don’t venture barefoot, as the rocks here are slippery.

Does your heart ache to depart? Well, there’s a way. Though not large in number, a handful of resorts offer you a stay for some days. Azhimala offers a refreshing beachside experience.
