Aizawl pull off last-gasp victory

New Delhi, May 9: Danmawia’s last-gasp goal helped I-League champions Aizawl FC notch up their second successive victory in the 38th Federation Cup, beating Churchill Brothers 2-1 in Cuttack on Tuesday to become the first team into the semi-finals.

Aizawl went ahead through defender Lalramchul­love in the 21st minute. They maintained their ascendancy till Churchill midfielder Ansumana Kromah equalised in the 84th minute.

The match seemed destined for a draw but Danmawia’s header in the 90th minute sealed three points for Aizawl.

The Noth-eastern team had won their first match 3-2 against Chennai City FC.

In Tuesday’s other match, Robin Singh struck twice to help East Bengal defeat Chennai City FC 2-0 for their first win of the tournament.

Chennai slumped to their second defeat of the tournament and are at the bottom of the table.

Robin scored in added time of the first half and in the 76th minute to guide East Bengal to a hardearned win. He capitalise­d on a sloppy clearance from the Chennai defence and scored from inside the box to give East Bengal the lead going into half-time.

The second goal for East Bengal came in the 76th minute when Robin converted from the spot after Ravanan’s handball inside the box.

On Wednesday, Mohun Bagan face Shillong Lajong while Bengaluru FC take on DSK Shivajians.
