Vigilantes thrash man, hospitalis­ed

In another case of mob vigilantis­m, a group of people thrashed a young man in South Delhi’s Madanpur Khadar suspecting him of being a cattle thief. The incident, which came to light on Sunday, happened on on July 7. The injured man, Iftikhar Alam, said he was on his way to a Metro constructi­on

On Friday, at about 2 am, a PCR call was received at the Sarai Kale Khan police station with the caller informing that a buffalo thief had been apprehende­d. Head constable Yazuvender reached the spot to find Iftikhar held by local residents that alleged they saw three buffaloes tied together with Iftikhar standing near them with a tempo.

After taking up the case, the police learnt that the injured, who was assaulted on grounds of suspicion, was a driver with J. Kumar Company. He had gone to a scrap dealer for some personal work only to be beaten up by the public. After conducting a preliminar­y probe, the police called officials of the company to the spot and the issue was amicably settled. The victim had refused medical examinatio­n initially. However, he was later admitted to Jeewan Hospital where he is undergoing treatment.
