Students who failed to study in open school

- AGE CORRESPONDENT

Over 60,000 students from Delhi government schools, who had recently failed Class 10 exams, will be readmitted in NIOS Board and special classes will be held for them.

The announcement was made by deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia after it was decided in a Cabinet meeting.

Talking to reporters, Mr Sisodia, who also holds the education portfolio, said that around 62,000 students gave the Class 10 exams through patrachar (correspondence) in the last academic year, but only 2,000 could pass.

He added that the ones, who could not clear the exam, would be enrolled in National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) and will be taught at new centres, which will be set up by the government.

“Students who fail in Class 10 usually drop out later and are not able to continue their studies. To retain them in the system, they will be admitted to NIOS Board and given uniforms and books just like other school students. There will be more centres for girls so they do not have to travel too far from their homes,” said Mr Sisodia.

He also announced that a third edition of the “Mega PTM” in government schools would be held on September 1.

“Delhi students, who later enrol in colleges and universities outside Delhi, will also be eligible for the loan guarantee scheme and can take loans upto `10 lakh for the purpose,” the deputy chief minister said.

The government’s plan to expand its education loan guarantee scheme to Delhi students studying outside the city was also approved in the Cabinet meeting.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Cabinet has also decided to set up GST committees in all prominent markets of Delhi to help traders resolve issues related to the new tax regime.
