JNU student gets bail in rape case

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Anmol Ratan, who was arrested by the Delhi Police for allegedly raping a 28-year-old PhD scholar at the varsity hostel last year, was granted bail by a city court on Tuesday.

The court asked him to furnish a bail bond of `50,000 with two sureties of the same amount. Senior advocate Rajiv Mohan, who appeared for Mr Ratan argued that there were contradictions in the allegations levelled by the victim. The court had earlier denied bail to the accused.

Advocates Abhimanu Kampani, Priyanka Singh and Satbir Singh Gill, who appeared for the defense, said that this time the court allowed their move and granted regular bail to their client.

The court had on October 14 last rapped the Delhi police for failing to file forensic reports on time despite repeated warnings and had asked the cops as to why should not be penalised for inaction.

chargesheet, the victim had written on the victim's social networking website’s wall that she wanted to watch a movie and had asked if anyone had the CD of the film. Mr Ratan had then messaged her, saying he had a copy of the same.

The JN U student later picked her up on August 20 last year on the pretext of giving her the CD, and took her to the Brahamputra Hostel. After offering her a spiked drink, he raped her, the chargesheet said.

On August 21, 2016, the victim got a rape case filed with the Vasant Kunj (North) police station against him.

Following this, Mr Ratan was also expelled from the All India Students' Association after the incident. He had been lodged behind bars for almost a year.
