Musharraf fugitive in Benazir murder case

- SHAFAQAT ALI ISLAMABAD, AUG. 31

A Pakistani court on Thursday declared former military ruler Pervez Musharraf a fugitive in the 2007 Benazir Bhutto murder case and sentenced two police officers to 17 years in prison.

The anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi also ordered attachment of properties of Mr Musharraf, who was declared a proclaimed offender in August 2011. The court had indicted Mr Musharraf in the case in February 2011.

The court on Thursday sentenced former Rawalpindi city police officer Saud Aziz and former Rawal Town superintendent of police Khurram Shahzad to 17 years in prison, and imposed a fine of 5 lakh Pakistani rupees each.

Bhutto, a two-time PM, was killed in a gun-and-bomb attack after a rally outside Rawalpindi’s Liaquat Bagh on December 27, 2007 while Mr Musharraf was the President.

Lahore, Aug. 31: Former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has hinted that fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, the key accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, is in Karachi.

In an interview with a Pakistani news channel, Musharraf said, “India has been accusing Pakistan for long. Why should we now become good and assist them? I don’t know where Dawood is. He must be here, somewhere. India has been killing Muslims and Dawood Ibrahim has been reacting,” giving a clear indication that the wanted criminal might be putting up in Pakistan.

Pakistan has consistently denied about Dawood Ibrahim residing there, despite India maintaining that that he indeed lives in a palatial house in a posh area in Karachi.

For the last 10 years, New Delhi has sent several dossiers to Islamabad in this regard, naming Ibrahim as the accused in the Mumbai blasts case.

India had earlier also accused Pakistan of giving shelter to Al Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden and a team of the US Navy Seals, in a special operation, killed him on May 2, 2011.
