effect. Following the mishap, the N. M. Joshi police station registered an FIR against three persons, identified as Ritesh Sanghvi, Jigar Sanghvi and Abhijeet Mankar of C Grade Hospitalit­y & Entertainm­ent LLP, who were responsibl­e for the management of 1Above.

The accused have been booked under Section 304 of the IPC, pertaining to punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder that is a punishable for a term which may extend to10 years and shall also be liable to fine, along with Section 337, 338 and 34 of the IPC pertaining to causing hurt by endangerin­g life and security of others and common intention respective­ly.

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis visited the spot and directed the BMC to probe the mishap and submit its report within 15 days.

Mr Fadnavis said that if BMC officials are found guilty in issuing permission­s to hotels without checking all the conditions, then criminal action will be taken against them.

“Owners will be held responsibl­e for the incident and charges under IPC will be slapped on them. Similarly, officers will be booked under same sections if they are found guilty,” he said.

The CM also directed the civic body to carry out fire audit for similar structures in the city. There was uproar in the BMC Standing Committee meeting over the fire with the Opposition accusing civic officials of turning a blind eye towards illegal activities at Kamala Mill Compound. Replying to them, BMC chief Ajoy Mehta said, “Taking a serious note of the incident, we have decided to suspend Madhukar Shelar, official of building and factory department of GSouth ward, assistant engineer Dinesh Mahale, junior engineer Dhanraj Shinde, medical health officer Dr Satish Badgire and assistant divisional fire officer S. S. Shinde as they have been prima facie found for derelictio­n of duty. Assistant commission­er of G- South ward Prashant Sapkale has also been transferre­d with immediate effect.”

The statement released by 1Above Management said, “1Above has all its fire safety regulation­s, licenses, procedures and norms in place. We have been able to help save many lives thanks to our fire safety protocols.”
