MediaTek brings facial recognition

- AGE CORRESPONDENT

MediaTek is a wellknown firm for making expensive and exclusive features on smartphone affordable. Some of the renowned manufacturers in the field rely on Mediatek’s chipsets for keeping a balance between features and affordability. It seems that MediaTek is again eyeing to make some of the modern premium smartphones features more accessible with the launch of their new budget chipset primarily for the upcoming Android Go devices.

Called the MediaTek MT6739, the chipset is primarily meant for powering budget smartphones. It houses a 64bit quad core processor with ARM Cortex- A53 CPUs that can be clocked up to 1.5Ghz. There’s also native support for facial recognition technology. The company also says that the new chipset supports 4G VoLTE functions on both SIM card slots simultaneously ( good for those using two Jio SIM cards) and will allow for larger full- screen 18: 9 display designs on affordable smartphones. The IMG GE8100 GPU operating up to 570MHz means that smartphones using this SoC will be able to push up to 1440 x 720- pixel resolution.

The chipset supports up to 13MP sensors that record videos at Full HD resolution. It will not be a powerhouse chipset as MediaTek has only allowed support for up to 3GB of LPDDR3 RAM.

With a budget chipset like this, OEMs looking to offer Android Go smartphones at reasonable price tags will be able to bring new technologies to the masses. There has been a confirmation of Micromax building new Android Go devices, one of which is expected to launch in late February in India. Also, Jio is working with MediaTek to bring affordable Android Go smartphones to the Indian consumer.
