Politicians blamed for language trouble

- — PTI, UNI

Madras: The chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, K. Brahmananda Reddi said here today that the present language trouble in some of the states was the result of politicians trying to exploit the emotions of the people.

Talking to newsmen he said the problem could be solved without any difficulty if vested political interests observed a code of conduct and kept themselves away from the problem.

Brahmananda Reddi arrived in Madras from Delhi this afternoon after attending the Congress Working Committee meeting on the language issue.

He said there was no escape from the three- languages formula for the country and it should be accepted in the larger interests of the nation.

The language problem had to be considered along with the need to maintain national unity, he added.

Reddi, said that the original Official Languages ( Amendment) Bill giving statutory recognition to the late Prime Minister Nehru’s assurance was “really a concession” to the South and that would have solved the problem. But the subsequent resolution to the bill which, it stated, was unnecessary had resulted in placing additional burden on the Southerners, he added.

This burden could be equalised by implementation of the three- language formula by all the states, he added.
