Charges filed against IAF officer for alleged espionage

The Delhi police has filed a charge sheet against an Indian Air Force ( IAF) officer, arrested in February on alleged espionage.

The charge sheet was filed before chief metropolit­an magistrate Deepak Shehrawat here against Group Captain Arun Marwah, who was booked under the Official Secrets Act ( OSA) for allegedly leaking classified documents to a woman through WhatsApp. The court has put up the final report for taking cognisance on April 24.

According to the complaint

filed against Marwah, the IAF intelligen­ce wing personnel caught him after he was found carrying a high- end phone, an area where such devices are banned, on January 31. Punishment under the OSA entails a jail term of up to seven years.

Marwah, who was arrested in February, leaked classified informatio­n about three new triservice agencies, Defence Cyber Agency, Defence Space Agency and a Special Operations Division, to the two women, suspected to be working for a foreign spy agency.

The IAF intelligen­ce had initiated a probe based on inputs that classified informatio­n was being leaked from the IAF headquarte­rs.

“He was working as joint director ( operations),” the FIR had said. “During questionin­g, he said he was in touch with the women and passed classified informatio­n to them. He also shared a classified document about the forthcomin­g IAF exercise with them, which may help enemies and will affect India’s security.”
