University teams up with cycle sharing platform

Students and teachers of the Delhi Technologi­cal University ( DTU) can pedal to their destinatio­ns on the 164- acre campus, a facility that was launched today after the varsity partnered with an appbased bicycle- sharing platform.

Around 150 bicycles will be deployed to give students and staff an environmen­talfriendl­y twowheeler alternativ­e for trips within the sprawling Campus.

Cyclists will be able to pick up and drop the bicycles from practicall­y anywhere within the university premises to either travel from their hostel to classes or to traverse different department­s, without having to resort to motorised vehicles.

The initiative by the university, located in north Delhi, has been taken in collaborat­ion with Ofo, a dock less bicycle sharing platform operated via a mobile app. It was inspired by the concept of sharing economy and was facilitate­d by smartphone technology, aimed at tackling the last mile connectivi­ty challenge in urban areas. This is the organisati­on’s second pilot project in the capital.

Encouragin­g students to promote the bicycling initiative, DTU vice- chancellor, Yogesh Singh, said that the university would pay for the rides taken by its staff and faculty to promote bicycling in the campus.
