A six- member committee met on Friday to study and analyse issues related to safety of women in the national capital.

Some of the recommendations made by the committee include phasing out only- boys’ schools, deploying a police force in the varsities, improving the last mile connectivity for Metro and buses, appointing a woman driver/ conductor in school buses and redesigning public spaces.

The committee was formed in March last year by lieutenant- governor ( LG) Anil Baijal postNirbhaya incident

The report that has been formulated after conducting discussions with all stakeholders, after analysing all causes of offences against women, gave recommendations not only to Delhi police, but also various government agencies and departments.

In a direction to the city schools, the panel’s report suggests sex education programmes for schoolgoing students and periodically sensitising both teaching and non- teaching staff. To make public transports safer, the panel suggested installing a helpline device in buses linked to the police control room.

Other recommendations include installing more prepaid auto stands at Metro stations, collecting gender- disaggregated data to improve city transportation, constructing public toilets, especially at public places and bus stops, and removing drug addicts from footpaths can control roadside crime.

In its report, the committee also mentioned scarcity of public toilets for women, irregular police patrolling, overcrowded public transport, and absence of dustbins for disposal of menstrual waste as some of the factors that add to making Delhi unsafe for women.

Special commissioner of police S. Beniwal, who is shifted to Chandigarh as the director general of police, said that, “This is not just a law and order issue, time has come to make the city safer for women.”
