Osmania University golden jubilee

Hyderabad: The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Mr. Brahmanand­a Reddi, has issued an appeal for funds in connection with the Osmania University golden jubilee celebratio­ns. The President, Dr. Zakir Husain, will inaugurate the week- long celebratio­ns beginning on October 5, 1968.

Contributi­ons to the Osmania University Golden Jubilee Fund may be forwarded to the Secretary, O. U. G. F. c/ o The Registrar, Osmania University, Hyderabad- 7.

Special endowments and donations for specific academic or extra- curricular purposes may be made during the jubilee year.

The University reopens for the jubilee year on July 1.

Mr. Brahmanand­a Reddi said: “During the last 50 years, Osmania University has responded to historical change by meeting the growing demands of higher education and social needs. It was the first University in the country to adopt for several years an Indian language — Urdu — as the medium of instructio­n, thereby anticipati­ng the current trend to introduce the regional languages as the media of instructio­n in all Indian universiti­es. Throughout this long period the University stood for a cultural synthesis of the North and the South. Its cosmopolit­an character has also been reflected by the encouragem­ent given in the University to the study of Indian and foreign languages.”

“I am happy to learn that the university has been selected as a centre for advanced study and research in astronomy by the University Grants Commission. The proposed establishm­ent with Russian collaborat­ion of the Institute of Exploratio­n Geophysics in another achievemen­t. It is Osmania University’s capacity to respond creatively to the new demands of higher education while retaining its distinctiv­e character which has enabled it to gain a prominent place among the major Indian universiti­es.”
