Washington, Sept. 15: Cardinal Donald Wuerl, archbishop of Washington who was blamed for not doing enough to deal with paedophile priests in Pennsylvania, prostrated himself on Friday in a sign of repentance at a mass dedicated to victims of abuse.

“Our prayers are for those who were assaulted by abuse of clergy and the further indignity of an inadequate response,” said Wuerl, who has said he plans to travel to Rome in the near future to meet with Pope Francis to discuss his resignation.

“We must be prepared to do whatever is needed, including stepping aside. This action on my part is an essential aspect of the healing so that this Church we all love can move forward,” he wrote in a letter to priests.
