Yogi to build hostels for UP students in DU

- GAURAV PANDEY

The Uttar Pradesh government gave assurance to the Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) president, Shakti Singh, of constructing hostels for undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD students who hail from Uttar Pradesh (UP) and are studying in Delhi University (DU).

“The UP government is likely to send a proposal to DU to construct these hostels on UP government’s land in the national capital,” said Shakti Singh, the DUSU president who met UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and DUSU president, Shakti Singh, met Mr Adityanath and briefed about the ongoing problem of shortage of hostel berths for students along with a proposal for consideration to build 1,000 hostel berths for the outstation students for which about three acres of land is required. An estimated statement of `48 core for allocation of required funds for manpower, furnishing, medical, sports facilities, etc. was also forwarded.

Around 45,000 creditable students from UP take admission in different courses in different colleges, university departments, centres, institutes, and correspondence schools in DU every year though only 1-2 per cent of the students from UP get accommodation. This implies that meritorious students have to stay in rented accommodations around the university, which is expensive and unhygienic.

Mr Singh said, “I have closely seen the difficulties of students of our state studying in DU. I strongly propose and humbly request CM Yogi to kindly consider the construction of a hostel for undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD students of UP in Delhi or in Noida. The demands were well received by the CM and assurance was extended to the effect that the land titled under UP government will be utilised for construction of hostels and further directed the university administration to come up with a proposal.”

“Demand for hostels has always been one of the core agendas of ABVP. Acceptance and recognition of this proposal by the UP government has raised hopes for better and affordable stay among outstation students and it is a victory in itself. DUSU is expectant of this proposal taking shape at the earliest once the necessary formalities have been met with,” he said.
