— Sitaram Yechury, CPM leader

The ongoing process of updating the National Register of Citizens has sent a very strong message in neighbouring Bangladesh as security agencies in its assessment has found that the flow of infiltration has come down significantly in past couple of years. Informing that process of updating the NRC was acting as a very strong deterrent to infiltration, security sources said that Bangladesh also extended its pro-active cooperation in verifying the identity and taking back the people declared foreigners by the tribunal in India. Admitting that the growing index of economy in the frontier districts of Bangladesh adjoining Assam has also played the key role, sources said majority of migration was because of economic reasons. Pointing out that there has been an attempt to spread rumours, sources told this newspaper that the state government was taking necessary steps but there was hardly any chance of unrest after the publication of NRC on Aug. 31.
