- AGE CORRESPONDENT

Due to scarcity of talent in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has decided to start a new Bachelors degree course in the aformentioned fields as an attempt to solve the problem.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a conference organised by Education Promotion Society for India (EPSI) in Chennai, AICTE chairman Anil Dattatraya Sahasrabudhe said a committee has been constituted to assess the need for offering degree programmes in technologies, which are driving the next big transformation.

The Committee has approved a B.Tech course in AI and Data Science. He said the Committee considered other technologies including IoT and Cyber Security.

Mr Sahasrabudhe said AICTE will improve the quality of technical education and made a semester-long training programme for faculty members. AICTE has proposed to award ‘graded autonomy’ to institutions that meet certain criteria in terms of excellence and regarding this a meeting would be held on September 20, he said.

Inaugurating the event, Tamil Nadu governor Banwarilal Purohit said the country facing several challenges had achieved number of milestones in higher education and every year nearly one crore youth complete course and become ready for employment opportunities. The Indian educational institution should compete with international educational institutions and introduce new innovation in the sector.

G. Viswanathan, president, EPSI, and founder-chancellor of VIT University, sought increased government spending on education.
