Army’s advisory on fake online profiles

New Delhi: The Army has cautioned its officials against 150 fake social media profiles that are being used by adversaries for honey trapping in order to extract sensitive information.

Pakistan Intelligence Operatives are using spiritual gurus and babas’ social media profiles to trap Indian Army personnel to elicit sensitive military information.

Indian Army in a dossier issued in midOctober has warned its men against various tactics being employed by the Pakistani spies.

The Army has identified around 150 social media profiles of Pakistani spies which are using various modus operandi to try to trap its men.

The dossier said that Pakistani spies are posing as spiritual gurus or baba on the social media like You Tube and are targeting service personnel and their family members. Pakistan Intelligence Operatives try to gain the trust of the Army personnel and their family members to extract sensitive military information through Skype or Whatsapp.

The Army dossier also warns its men against honey-trap by Pakistan spies, who create fake female profiles on the social media like Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

Rajasthan police on Wednesday arrested two Indian Army personnel Lance Naik Ravi Verma and Sepoy Vichitra Behera for sending sensitive information to Pakistan. Both of them were honey-trap by Pakistani spies posing as woman on Facebook with the name of “Seerat”, said sources.

The dossier said that Pak spies also call jawans or their family members posing as Army officers, mission commanders, journalists, nurses from military service, welfare officers and insurance agents. Army has asked its personnel not to post pictures in uniform on social media, avoid accepting friend requests from unknown people, avoid suspicious websites and not to take calls from or chat with unidentified people.
