New Delhi: Visually challenged students of Jawaharlal Nehru University on Wednesday protested outside the old police HQ here against the alleged lathicharge by the force on differently abled students of the varsity.

Visually challenged students of JNU on Wednesday protested outside the old police headquarters at ITO to mark their protest against the police lathicharge on university students.

The members of the JNU visually challenged students forum also alleged that when they were going to Jai Singh Road to protest outside the new police headquarters, the police stopped them. They said their bus was stopped and taken to Vasant Kunj police station. Later, they said their bus was brought to the old police headquarters at ITO where they protested.

“We want a written apology from police who had beaten up the students. A few days back, police were protesting after they were beaten up by lawyers. How could they forget that students also have a right to protest?” said the protesting students.

“The students have submitted a memorandum to the police demanding action against those police personnel who allegedly beat them. The students were given assurance that an enquiry will conducted and appropriate action will taken,” said Anil Mittal, additional public relation officer, Delhi Police.

Students of Delhi University on Wednesday protested against the “police lathicharge” on their JNU counterparts during a demonstration over hostel fee hike. They also protested against the New Education Policy and said it is an “attempt” to privatise education.
