Convicts in Nirbhaya case to be hanged soon: Mantri

◗ The Delhi high court on Wednesday gave one week to the four convicts in the Nirbhaya case to exhaust all legal remedies available to them.

Several members in Lok Sabha on Wednesday raised the issue of women safety and delay in hanging of Nirbhaya rapists. Responding to the members, Union minister for Law and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad assured them that convicts in the Nirbhaya gang-rape case will be hanged soon.

“As far as hanging of convicts in the Nirbhaya case is concerned, the Supreme Court has already sentenced them to death. The law is being misused by the culprits to delay punishment which is not justified We are very strict. Justice will be given to her. Convicts will be hanged soon,” Mr Prasad said.

Several women and some men MPs cutting across party lines demanded better safety and justice delivery system as they mentioned incidents of violence against women.

Urging Law minister to take action, Independen­t MP from Maharashtr­a Navneet Ravi Rana said that that incidents of acid attack and sexual assault are taking place on almost daily basis. “We must take some special measures to prevent this otherwise such incidents will continue where someone throws acid, burns, stabs or kills.”

Raising the issue of a college teacher who was set ablaze by her stalker in Wardha district of Maharashtr­a, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member of Parliament (MP) Ashok Nete said the government should provide adequate compensati­on to the victim and demanded that the accused should be punished and the matter be referred to a fast track court.

All India Majlis-eIttehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) MP from Aurangabad Syed Imtiyaz Jaleel mentioned about a sexual assault case in his constituen­cy where a woman was set on ablaze for refusing sexual favours to owner of a beer shop and sought fast track courts and exemplary punishment for the culprits.
