5 more held for IB staffer Ankit Sharma’s murder

Police has received 1,330 CCTV footages of the northeast Delhi violence. Around 150 weapons have also been recovered which were used during the violence, said a senior police officer.

The Delhi Police has arrested five more persons in connection with Intelligen­ce Bureau staffer Ankit Sharma’s murder case during northeast Delhi violence last month.

The accused have been identified as Feroz, Javed, Gulfam, and Shoaib from Chand Bagh and Anas from Mustafabad. The police said that it identified the accused persons through CCTV footage, eyewitness, and local informers.

Earlier on Thursday, a man, identified as Salman, a resident of Nand Nagri, was arrested in connection with the murder case.

“The police has made portraits of two suspected persons and identified four to five more men who are currently on the run. Efforts are being made to arrest them,” said a senior police official.

Sharma’s body was found in a drain near his home in northeast Delhi’s Chand Bagh area on February 27, a day after he went missing. The police said that it is also interrogat­ing Tahir Hussain in connection with Sharma’s murder case.

On Thursday, the police had also arrested seven people in connection with the murder of a Delhi police head constable. Also on Thursday, the Special Cell of Delhi Police had arrested two key office-bearers of Popular Front of India (PFI) for their alleged involvemen­t in antiCitize­nship Amendment Act (CAA) protests at Shaheen Bagh and northeast Delhi riots.

The accused have been identified as PFI Delhi president Parvez and secretary Ilyas. Sources said that investigat­ion has revealed that they were involved in funding during the violence and antiCAA protests in the city.

Police have filed over 700 cases and arrested or detained 3,400 people in connection with the communal violence in northeast Delhi last month, officials said on Saturday. In total, 718 cases have been filed out of which 55 were registered under the Arms Act, police said.

Of the 3,400 detained or arrested, 60 persons have been held under the Arms Act, they said. The violence in northeast Delhi last month claimed 53 lives and left over 200 injured. The riots were triggered by clashes between those protesting the Citizenshi­p Amendment Act and those supporting it.
