Highest spike of 792 cases in 24 hrs, toll reaches 303

With restrictio­ns being eased, the national capital saw a sharp spike in the total number of Covid-19 cases as 792 people tested positive in the last 24 hours. The city’s tally is now at 15,257 with the death toll crossing 300 on Wednesday.

According to Delhi health department bulletin, the national capital reported 792 new cases in last 24 hours, largest single-day spike in new cases and for the first time that over 700 cases have been reported in day period. The total number of cases now stand at 15,257. The previous highest spike in fresh cases — 660 — was recorded on May 22.

In a bulletin issued on Wednesday, the Delhi health department said the death toll from coronaviru­s infection has risen to 303, and the total number of cases mounted to 15,257.

It, however, added that the cumulative death figures refers to fatalities where primary cause of death was found to be Covid-19, as per the report of the Death Audit

Committee on the basis of case sheets received from various hospitals.

With 792 fresh cases, the total number of coronaviru­s cases in Delhi has climbed to 15,257.

Delhi government data said that 310 people had been discharged from hospitals over the past 24 hours, taking the number of recoveries to 7,264 with a recovery rate of

47.61 per cent.

A DCP in Delhi police has tested positive for Covid-19. According to police, the report of the officer being positive came on Wednesday. The officer is currently under home isolation. Identifica­fion of the staff, who was in contact with the officer, is underway.

The number of containmen­t zones in Delhi has

been increased to 96 from 91. The national capital has been under the lockdown since May 23. However, curbs were announced much before. Schools were first ones to be closed.

Deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia interacted with principals of over 1,000 government schools on Wednesday to chalk out a plan for reopening.
