At a time when the role of journalism becomes increasingly important, let us pause a moment to reflect how far Hindi and Indian journalism has come since May 30, 1826, when the country's first Hindi newspaper, Udant Martand (Tidings of the Sun) was published on this day. It continued to be published weekly by Pandit Jugal Kishore Shukla. But it ran for only one year and folded up in 1827. The office of the newspaper was at 37, Amartalla Lane, Kolutolla, near Barabazar Market in Kolkata. Today is Hindi Patrakarita Divas, Hindi Journalism Day. Priyanka Saurabh
