The Asian Age

Stay fit with home workouts If you are working out at home this COVID season, then here is a guide to follow age-appropriate exercises

- NAYARE ALI

These past few months may have altered the way you exercise. So many of us are turning to YouTube videos to identify workouts that best suit our body types. Bangalore-based fitness trainer Yogain, who specialises in strength and functional training, believes that people should base their workouts on their fitness levels and not their age. “Our ‘Body age’ matters more than our ‘Chronological age’. Your fitness level may or may not match your ‘age’. You may be young and obese, or underweight, lacking muscle strength due to inactivity, which makes your body older than your actual age with regard to fitness parameters — body composition, cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength, balance/stability and flexibility,” he stresses.

WORKOUT GOALS

Mumbai-based fashion and lifestyle blogger Shrima Rai has enlisted a trainer to plan a fourweek workout for her to follow. “I change my routine every day. I rotate among cardio, crunches, squats, push-ups and planks and use resistance bands for muscle training,” says the 38-year-old mother of two boys. “My age comes with its set of concerns, as my bone density and strength have to be taken into account while I work out,” she adds.

Sarita Mandoth is a svelte Bangalore-based fashion designer. The 51-year-old opts for workout programmes by world-famous trainers like Bob Harper, Jeanette Jenkins, Pop Sugar, Yoga with Adrianne and Boho Beautiful. “Age is just a number. I have become fitter, stronger and more disciplined while working out from home,” she says.

Entrepreneur Reshma Rajpal is 48 years old. “Ever since the gyms and outdoor activities were shut, I have been doing a group crossfit training workout every evening for an hour-and-a-half with my trainer Abhinav Shankar. We do our sessions on Zoom with all our gym mates. It actually feels like working out together in a gym. This has helped me stay fit not only physically but mentally too,” says the lady.
