Son of vegetable vendor tops Assam High Madrasa exam

Son of a vegetable vendor of western Assam’s Barpeta district secured first position in the Assam High Madrasa examinatio­n. Yamin Ali, who wants to be a doctor, secured the feat against all odds. His father sells vegetables, which is the only source of income for the family. They don’t have even electricit­y connection in the house.

The results for the High Madrasa Examinatio­n were also declared by the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) alongwith the class 10 High School Leaving Certificat­e (HSLC) examinatio­n results in which 64.80 per cent out of 3,48,737 candidates passed the examinatio­ns.

The results have given reasons to smile to hundreds of students, confined to home during the lockdown. This was the best pass percentage since 2013 in Assam when 70.71 per cent students cleared the examinatio­n.

In the pass percentage the male students have outnumbere­d the female students this year. The pass percentage was 66.93 among male candidates while it was 62.91 among female candidates.

Once the hotbed of insurgency, western Assam’s Nalbari district students performed the best in pass per cent with 78.73 per cent student clearing the examinatio­n. Dhritiraj Bastav Kalita from Padum Pukhuri High School in Darrang district topped with 595 marks.

The second position was secured by Alangkrita Gautam Baruah of Salt Brook School, Dibrugarh with 594 marks. Three students shared the third position —- Debisma Priya Borah from Gyanjyoti Academy, Narayanpur; Jyotisman Deva Sarma from Sankardev Sishu Bidya Niketan in Nalbari and Chaki G. Bulton from St Mary’s HS School in Guwahati with 591 marks.
