- SHASHI BHUSHAN

Putting an additional tax burden on residents in its jurisdiction, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), on Monday, imposed professional tax along with other taxes in its jurisdiction. A proposal in this regard was passed by the SDMC House.

Professionals working in South Delhi areas or who have their office spaces in the jurisdiction of SDMC will now have to pay professional tax to the civic body. SDMC, on Monday, passed the proposal of levying the tax.

“The professional tax is proposed to be levied on self-employed professionals such as doctors, lawyers, chartered accountants, architects, etc. along with those working in private firms. It would be charged from the companies that are registered in the jurisdiction of South Corporation as well as from professionals running their firms in the jurisdiction,” said SDMC Leader of House Narender Chawla.

Professionals earning between `50,001 and `75,000 will be charged `100 per month and those earning between `75,001 and `1 lakh per month will have to pay `150. Those professionals earning above `1 lakh will be charged `200 per month.

The civic body has also approved the proposal regarding waiving of previous year’s house tax for the residents of unauthorised colonies if they pay the house tax for the financial years 2019-20 and 202021. Mayor Anamika said that in order to provide relief to the citizens, the SDMC has decided that residential and commercial property holders have to pay the property tax only for two years (i.e. 2019-20 and 2020-21).

“The pending tax since 2004 will be completely waived off. Under the Amnesty Scheme, the benefit of 100 per cent waiver of interest and 100 per cent penalty is provided to all the properties. The last date of this Amnesty Scheme is July 30,” Ms Anamika added.
