Delhi riots: Families forced to sell homes after getting threats

- SHASHI BHUSHAN

Claiming threats to theires lives, some majority community families have put up posters to sell their houses in Northeast Delhi, which was hit by the riots in February this year.

Local Bharatiya Janata Party MP Manoj Tiwari, on Friday, visited Mohanpuri (Maujpur) and met some families which complained of discrimination by officials and threat to them from “other community.”

The former Delhi BJP president, Mr Tiwari, wrote a letter to chief minister Arvind Kejriwal saying he interacted with people at Mohanpuri who were “forced” to sell their houses as they feared for their lives and safety.

Vimlesh, a resident of Madhuban Mohalla (Mohanpuri), claimed that her family received threats to leave the area. A poster reading “this house is for sale due to fear” was put up on her house.

“My two sons have been in jail in connection with the riots since April. Besides facing financial hardships, we are being threatened by some people that they won’t allow us to live here,” she said.

A senior police officer said, “We have not been approached in this regard and action will be taken as per law if we receive any complaints.”

However, Chandra Prakash Maheshwari, another resident of Mohanpuri, claimed that he also received threats and was “forced” to sell his house.

“They are the same people with whom I had normal relations before the riots. But things have changed now and I feel helpless and am unwilling to live here any longer,” said Mr Maheshwari, whose son is in jail in connection with the riots since April.

Mr Tiwari said that the fear among the people in the area is a matter of grave concern and he would take up the matter with senior police officers.
