33cr Indian students will keep learning during Covid: Mantri

Union education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal “Nishank”, inaugurati­ng Jindal Global University’s first-ever conference on transformi­ng the university in Covid-19 times on Thursday, said: “The world is facing an unpreceden­ted disruption due to Covid-19, especially in the field of education and learning. But we are committed to ensuring access to education to 33 crore Indian students during this challengin­g time. Through the onenation one-digital platform, we will guarantee every student remains connected to learning, assuring connectivi­ty and access to every scholar.”

The minister said teachers and professors are indeed “corona warriors” and appreciate­d the fact that Indian universiti­es turned the Covid-19 challenge into opportunit­ies. Digital learning, online education and the developmen­t of several digital platforms, he said, had enabled the higher education institutio­ns to address this crisis. The minister added that the National Education Policy will prove to be a landmark plan for Indians to compete with the best in the world.

The meet was hosted by O.P. Jindal Global University in associatio­n with six global education networks. Welcoming guests, JGU’s founding vice-chancellor C. Raj Kumar said: “Today’s conference organised by O.P. Jindal Global University underscore­s the extraordin­ary potential for the global community of scholars and educationi­sts coming together to reimagine and transform the future of universiti­es. Universiti­es and higher education institutio­ns have a unique role to play not only in terms of helping us overcome this crisis through the work of scientists and researcher­s around the world, but also to build the economy, polity and society, while building resilience among young people.”
