Close shave for Nath as lift breaks down

Bhopal: A dozen Congress leaders, including Kamal Nath, had a narrow escape when the lift carrying them in a hospital in Indore on Sunday broke down. The lift broke down when it was around 10 ft above the ground floor and fell down.

A dozen Congress leaders including former chief minister Kamal Nath had a narrow escape when the lift carrying them in a hospital in Indore on Sunday broke down.

The incident occurred when Mr Nath along with senior Congress leaders, former ministers Jitu Patwari and Sajjan Singh Verma, and party MLA Vishal Patel were taking the elevator to go to the second floor of newly built DNS hospital in Indore to visit the ailing party leader Rameswar Patel.

Mr Nath who was in Indore to attend the party programme had decided to visit Mr Patel in the hospital to know about his health condition.

According to Congress media chief here Narendra Saluja, the lift carrying the Congress leaders broke down when it was around 10 ft above the ground floor and fell down.

The elevator was immediatel­y filled with smoke and dust following the accident. Mr Nath and other Congress leaders had remained confined inside the lift as its doors failed to open.

Doors were opened by a mechanic after 15 minutes to bring them out.

Mr Saluja described it as a serious lapse in Mr Nath’s security and demanded a high level probe into the lift incident.

He said Mr Nath and other Congress leaders were safe now.

Sources said Mr Nath felt uneasy following the accident. His medical tests were conducted by the doctors before he was discharged from the hospital.

Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan called Mr Nath on phone to know about his well being after the incident.

Mr Chouhan ordered a magisteria­l inquiry into the incident.
