‘B’desh has become role model in fighting poverty’
Bangladesh high commissioner Muhammad Imran has said that his country has become a role model in the world in fighting poverty. He was speaking at a cultural event recently organised in the national capital by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the Bangladesh high commission to celebrate “Mujib Barsho” and 50 years of establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh.
The “Mujib Barsho” refers to the centenary birth anniversary celebrations of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman—popularly known as Bangabandhu—who successfully led the Bangladesh freedom struggle in 1971.
The Bangladesh high commissioner spoke about the close ties and connectivity projects between his country and India. He also spoke about the large number of tourists from his country visiting India every year

as ties between the two neighbours gets even stronger in what is seen as a “Sonali Adhyay” (golden chapter) in bilateral ties. This comes even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Bangladesh just last month.
The cultural event comprised a dance performance by the troupe from the renowned Srishti Cultural Centre in Bangladesh.
Last month, external affairs minister S. Jaishankar had said, “I would also like to express our admiration and pride, as your closest neighbour and friend, at Bangladesh’s graduation from LDC (least developed country) status. It is truly a tribute to your miraculous socio-economic progress and a reflection of the statesmanship and leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.”
“We see Bangladesh as a key neighbour and a valued partner not only in South Asia but also in the broader Indo-Pacific region. It is no secret that we cite it to others as an example for emulation,” he added.
It may be recalled that Bangladesh is celebrating 50 years of its existence this year. The Indian armed forces’ victory over Pakistan in the war in December 1971 had led to the liberation of the erstwhile East Pakistan and the birth of Bangladesh as an Independent nation.
